Local Designer of the Week: Isobel Walker

Why not become a FrAsh Femme?

At an age when most individuals are still grappling in the dark in regards to their future, Isobel Walker had already begun to emerge out of the shadows. At the young age of 19, her inner artist surfaced and she began designing jewelry that quickly caught the attention of her peers. The constant admiration of her handmade pieces pushed her to delve deeper into the industry. The result? The creation of her own line called FrAsh femme, a predominantly repurposed vintage jewelry label. Each piece is a perfect handmade juxtaposition of vintage glamour and modern chic. These breath-taking designs became so popular that in 2005, upon request, she began to design a range of bridal jewelry that turned into another label called bel bel’s. I caught up with the designer to ask her a couple of questions about her life, the line and what’s next for this budding Ottawa designer.
What inspired you to start your line?

I started frAsh with a friend - Eiryn Jakob 8 years ago. We could not find any jewellery that suited our style and decided to create our own. Being that we were students and had just quit our jobs the only supplies we could buy were vintage pieces and rebuild them to our own stylings. Hence the name - frAsh. a fresh take on someone's trash.

Where are your designs available in Ottawa?

You can purchase frAsh at All Victoire Locations, Le Local Boutique, Chicshop.ca & off frAshfemme.com

*** Side note from the author *** Chicshop is currently closing it is doors which means it is time for a HUGE SALE! If you want to purchase Isobel’s amazing pieces, check them out on http://chicshop.ca ****

What does the future hold for your line?

I have had so much good luck with frAsh and it just continues! I have been blessed to meet important players in the industry and with their support have a lot if big things coming in the near future!

Can you give us a hint on what kind of big things are coming up?

We have runway shows coming up, magazine editorials, and a BIG event coming in the fall!!!

As an emerging designer, do you feel that Ottawa has helped or hindered the growth of your   label?

The relationship with Ottawa and the fashion scene is bitter sweet. I love Ottawa, I love the scene I love the people, and there is a lot of love and support for designers in Ottawa. I would not be able to exist without the help of Ottawa, so it has helped very very much. I am now at the point where I need to break out of Ottawa to continue to pursue my dreams for frAsh.

What advice would you give for emerging jewelry designers?

Start small, and make sure you have some money on the side! it is SO expensive to start a business!! I read some that Yves St Laurent said - that it takes 20 years as a fashion designer to become known and then an additional 5 to make a profit.  IT puts it in perspective.

Finally if you could collaborate with one other Canadian designer who would it be?

Dsquared!!! They are so adorable and their pieces are fun and wearable!
