New York's High Line - In Winter

Last June a new park opened on the elevated defunct freight railroad line on Manhattan's lower east side. The High Line is now open from Gansevoort St to West 20th Street. I'd seen photos of flowers and other plants growing along and in between the old rail tracks that made me want to visit. So two days after a large February snowstorm I found myself walking along a shoveled pathway on the High Line wondering why I hadn't waited until spring or summer. The day was cold, crisp and sunny and I soon realized the vegetation could wait for another visit as the views from this height were fun, interesting and worth my visit.


The High Line meanders along in open spaces then under/through/around buildings. The seating along the walk was still snow covered. I was happy to see that in addition to myself there were a few people out enjoying the walk.



Snow covered bench and some dead grasses poking up through the snow. The latter reminded me of Vermont fields but that thought was quickly dispelled by the buildings surrounding and over the walkway.


Looking across the Hudson River to New Jersey. Many buildings along the walk haven't been gentrified/restored/refurbished which was a plus in my opinion.

I enjoyed how the snow, bench and bushes contrasted with the urban scene on the other side of the railing.


The part of the High Line now open to the public ends at 20th Street. However I could see workmen further along the line so perhaps more will be open on my next visit.
