Matsushima - Temple Grounds

The main hall and other buildings at the Zuigan-ji Temple were under renovation when we visited. However the grounds were interesting and a peaceful place for a leisurely afternoon walk.

A grove of 400 year old cedar trees lines the walk into the main temple area.

I like the angled ground from the line of trees down to this side walkway at the temple.

Religious images are in many of the caves found on the temple grounds. We noticed several places in Matsushima had carved (blasted) out areas in the rocks which seemed to be used for storage.

A man working on the temple renovations. Notice the building is in the side of a rock. Grass is growing on the top of the rock roof.

A walkway through the rocks.

Another building built into the side of a rock.

A white cat followed us around at the end of our walk but didn't leave the area when we did.
