I first visited Hong Kong in 1974 and "fell in love" with the city. A few years later I bought the red fabric with Buddhist prayers and made the above wall hanging with the Chinese junk and hills above Hong Kong harbor. It's still one of my favorites.

The sun was so bright I decided to shoot a few other wall hangings outside among the leaves. I found this fabric with Japanese writing in a sale bin at a fabric store. The colorful fabric is a Japanese style print and the yellow crane is from an old kimono that was falling apart. Years later I studied Chinese and some Japanese language. I then realized that whoever printed the fabric didn't know any Japanese as it's printed in reverse.
I used some left over fabric and made a small quilt on the back too.
The log cabin is a very popular quilt. I used very untraditional colors amd silks fabrics in this experimental four block log cabin sampler. The rectangular embellishments are folded fabric called prairie points. This small unfinished piece is also reversible. I sewed the both sides at the same time and in the middle is a piece of thin white flannel for stability. The white flannel doesn't show when the quilt is finished.

A more traditional wall hanging made with Japanese style cotton fabrics. The pattern is called Lone Star.
I made this modern design wall hanging after a trip to Miami Beach where I was enchanted with the pastel colored Art Deco hotels. I machine quilted "Miami Beach" and a flamingo with metallic thread.
