Un scoop de la mode parisienne

With the French Open getting underway, the tennis elite was quick to showcase its latest outfits. The venue being Paris, la capitale de la mode, many players got inspired. In the absence of the Williams sisters and with Wozniacki insisting to wear the hideous Hawaiian dress, Maria Sharapova stole the show with a bright yellow, classy Nike dress. There must be something about the Roland Garros, as Sharapova always wears her most remarkable outfits in the French capital. I have heavy criticizes the Russian this year for lowering her fashion standards and allowing herself to wear the same clothes as other tour player. Although I still think she lost her authenticity and thus the uniqueness of her outfits has vanished, the Russian proved she retains her fashionista status. She knows exactly what clothes to pick and how to make a fashion statement. After winning in Rome, Sharapova looks poised to conquer Paris and to complete her Grand Slam collection.

Kim Clijsters, probably the top female contestant, signaled her return from injury with a new look. The cute Belgian looks younger, fresher and completely focused on adding a first Suzanne Lenglen cup to her resume. The interesting thing about her outfit is that, due to the pattern, the blouse blends in perfectly with the clay surface. Although I am not blown away by it, I am enchanted by her overall look. Great to have adorable Kimmie back.

Without starting out from the crowd, Victoria Azarenka and Vera Zvonareva are both topping the mainstream Nike, respectively USTA, fields with great looking outfits. While Victoria made some inspired choices this year, managing to always look her utmost best, Zvonareva is yet to climb the highest fashion peaks. After turning around her career with Grand Slam finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, Vera gives signs that she is improving her style too. I really like the K-Swiss apparel and fashion wise, I think she took an inspired decision to switch to the American sponsor.

As usually though, not everyone was that inspired. Sabine Lisicki for example wore a completely mismatched orange/ pink outfit, while Tsvetlana Pironkova looked cheap and cheesy in her strawberry, 'fancy wannabe' top. At least these two players wore what their sponsors gave them. It wasn't the case for fashionistas disasters Jelena Jankovic and Bethanie Mattek-Sands who continue to present to us the rough outcome of their styleless creativity. While Jankovic proudly introduced us with the pink version of her 'spring' dress, Bethanie, proving to be a one-trick ponny, wore her trademark knee high socks and coal miner make-up.

On the men's side, Roger Federer is back to his fashion best. After getting rid of the dull T-shirt he wore lately, the Swiss Master is once again elevating his style with a great carmine T-shirt and a matching jacket. A plus for the retro element of his outfit.

French duo of Gael Monfils and Jo Wilfried Tsonga wore dynamic outfits to match their volcanic personalities. While Monfils dared the partisan home crowds in vivid purple, Tsonga kept to his usual green. The dark tone of their skins contrasts very well bold colours, so the Frenchmen proved inspired once more. Compared to the rest of the player, they provide the fashion salt & pepper that the ATP tour needs.

A fashion scoop at the beginning of the clay-court season!

As soon as the clay-court season kicked off, the women on the WTA tour were quick to show off their latest outfits. Jelena Jankovic, playing in Charleston this week, introduced to us her spring ensemble hoping to cause a commotion. Unfortunately, her hideous ANTA dress 'helped' her end up on the worst dressed list. I have to admit I am no fan of the Serbian's style and since switching from Reebok, I have all the reasons in the world not to. Her contract with the Asian sportswear company, doesn't do her any good., as the clothes lack refinement, class and their design is way too elaborate. It might be due to the image of her new, no-brand sponsor, but they look cheap overall. It's no wonder, no one except some Chinese players are actually endorsing them. However, getting back to this piece, I haven't seen something so horrible since Venus' fashion faux pas at the Australian Open. According to her, Jelena tried to portray spring. Nevertheless, this 'blossoming' green outfit, which she helped design, resembles more an ugly tablecloth than a blooming spring landscape. Although, she really puts efforts into this, the Serbian must admit once and for all that she's not a tennis fashionista and probably never will.

On the other hand, Jankovic's conqueror is a genuine one. After disposing of the Serbian in the semis, Caroline Wozniacki went on to beat Russian Elena Vesnina in the final to capture the title. Not only did she won her third trophy of the year, all at premier events, but the young Dane proved her recent fashion slip was accidental. Wearing a youthful ensemble featuring a contrasting peachy top and an intense sea-blue skirt, she managed to look utterly amazing once more. Dazzling on the green clay of South Carolina in Stella McCarthy designs, Caroline finally grab the title that eluded her in her previous two attempts (i.e. she lost in the final of 2009 to Lisicki and had to retire in the semis last year after injuring her ankle). Benefiting from the absence of the Williams sisters, Wozniacki is not only strengthening her position atop of the rankings, but she  is also reinforcing her recently won status as the most fashionable player on the tour.

Jelena Jankovic Comes Out Firing

Jelena Jankovic will be 26 this coming February, the same age that Amelie Mauresmo was when she won her first Grand Slam title in 2006 at the Australian Open. The French phenom, was also No1 in the world for some time without one of the biggest tennis crowns to her name. Amelie was able to change her fortune, and so will Jankovic in 2011.

Why is this year so important for this Serbian star? Because no former No1 has ever won their maiden Grand Slam title at an older age then Mauresmo did at 26. If Jelena misses the mark next year, she will enter uncharted territory and have to win her first Grand Slam title being older than any of her WTA predecessors in history.

Of course itwouldn’t be the first time Jelena has accomplished somethingunprecedented in WTA tournaments and rankings. In 2008 she became the only No1 in history without an appearance in a Grand Slam final, a fact she erased few weeks later earning a spot in the US Open title match. As 2008 came to a close she was crowned as the first WTA World champion without a Grand Slam title, a fact that Jelena gets rash about whenever questioned in the media.

“Grand Slams are not the only tournaments in tennis. There are other big titles I have won”, seems to be Jelena's stock answer when the question arises. I believe that deep down, she knows what the most important titles in tennis are, and won't give up fighting until she has one of them.
