Jewelry that Kills

Kali Arulpragasam started her jewelry line with the intent to create designs that were politically conscious in form and influenced by social realism, the environment and nations torn by war. As a result, her line (Super Fertile) has been making politically charged jewelry since 2006. Arulpragasam’s creativity is beyond inspiring, the young artist has found a way to make stunning pieces that have a clear message. Some of her lines includes “Tourism (Terrorism affects Tourism) which featured large silver- and gold-plated necklaces, shaped like murals using countries (like Iraq) as themes. These beautifully crafted necklaces reach from just below the neck to a person’s naval and celebrate positive aspect of war-torn nations.

Her line HUNGER featured designs from cereal grains and legumes such as rice, wheat, lentils and beans. The designer took the molds of each of these food products and then cast solid silver and gold-plated beads that she used in her pieces. This line ranges from delicate pieces to statement pieces and was meant to raise awareness of the current world food crises.Bonus: part of these jewelry sales went to OXFAM UK.

Now, Kali is at it again as she introduces yet another politically charged line called MURDER. The line is themed specifically around the murders of innocent civilians in the Sri Lankan war. During her childhood, the war forced Kali and her family to flee to the country and settle in London. Sound familiar? It comes as no surprise that Kali is the sister of another artist who is known for her expressing her strong opinions: MIA! MURDER is a collection featuring bullet wounds, cuts and knife slashes accented with rubies, sapphires and rubies. If you want to see more of her work, all her collections are on her website:  http://www.superfertile.com/. Check out MURDER below.

What do you think of this collection? Inspiring or too much?
