I have slowly run out of "local designers of the week" and have cast my net a little wider. As a result I have started to reach out to amazing Canadian designers that are setting the trends.
Introducing, Anu Raina. Raina wowed the crowd during LG Fashion Week this past March with her avant garde Fall/Winter 2011 collection. After her spectacular show, the textile designer was declared to be the one of the "hottest designers in Canada" by the head of LG Fashion Week and president of the Fashion Design Council of Canada, Robin Kay. I caught up with the designer to ask her a couple of questions about herself, her line and the future.
1. Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you started (were inspired) to start you line
I originally come from the small Himalayan state of Kashmir in India. Having trained in both Fashion Design (from London College of Fashion in London, England) and Textile Art (from Sheridan college in Oakville Ontario), I wanted to combine my knowledge from both and create a unique brand that would be sophisticated, sensual, chic and yet with a relaxed feel. A line that would bridge the gap between Fashion and Art. My inspiration comes mostly from my own life experiences. My collection of separates and accessories at LG Fashion week was an extension of my autobiographical artwork titled “Chapter 2 Page 1” (currently exhibited at the Pearson Airport in Toronto).
2. Tells us a little bit about your show at LG Fashion Week. How was the selection process, how did you feel, etc
I was still recovering from a major right elbow surgery when the online applications for the Toronto Fashion week came out. My mentor, my friend and famous Canadian Textile designer Virginia Johnson encouraged me to apply for it. After a couple of months I got an acceptance call from FDCC. I was completely exhilarated to be a part of the biggest Fashion event in Canada. Although I was a bit nervous to be showing alongside such incredibly talented and experienced Canadian designers, my work was very well received.
3. Where are your pieces sold?
My clothing and accessories are sold in several boutiques across Toronto, Vancouver and a gallery boutique in Quebec City.
4. As an emerging designer, do you feel that being a Canadian designer has helped or hindered the growth of your label?
I couldn't have imagined being where I am today exactly one year after graduating from Sheridan college if it wasn't for all the encouragement and support I received as a new designer.
5. What does the future hold for your line?
I do not follow trends. I want to carve my own niche and want my pieces to be seen as original work of art from a Canadian Artist/Designer. It's a long journey but I have many stories to tell…
6. If you could collaborate with one other Canadian designer who would it be?
Definitely Artist/Designer Denis Gagnon. I am a big fan of his work and simply love his inventive approach to design.
