Have you ever seen those DOVE commercials on the internet and the television? Unilever has spent years and millions (I think) of dollars trying to send the world a clear message: Love your body. When I watched the ads and the videos, I was inspired. Finally a company that wasn't scared to ditch the norm and show real women with real bodies. The principle behind the campaign is to celebrate the natural physical variation embodied by all women and inspire them to have the confidence to be comfortable with themselves. Girl power? I think so. The profits from these products fund self-esteem workshops for young girls in organizations like Girl Scouts of America or the Boys and Girls Club. Here are a couple of ads by the campaign:
The company even released (a couple of years ago) a video called Onslaught and an interesting video that showed how a regular woman can be magically transformed into a bombshell with the help of photo-shop.
I completely agree with the message behind the campaign. I LOVE fashion, but I have to say people are still getting skinnier and skinner. It's refreshing to see a company that wants to focus on women empowerment. BUT (and there is a but), I was completely crushed when I found out that Unilever is also the proud owner of AXE. Have you hear about it? Here is just a sneak peak for their fabulous (*eye roll*) advertisements and commercials.
Now my question is this: how can Unilever also produce these horrible and sexist advertisements. Hypocrites? I don't know what to think or say. I love that a company has finally started to branch out from the typical "skinny models" and feature different AND beautiful women out there. I just don't understand how they can also be the brains behind AXE. Does this mean that DOVE actually does not care about women and their self esteem? Is this all a marketing ploy? Or should I just be happy that at least someone is trying to make a difference (and donates money to worthwhile causes) and accept Dove's subsequent doppelgänger. Here is an interesting video made by an individual that was angered by the hypocrisy of the company:
Please tell me what you think!
