A Great Non-Fiction Read - The Snakehead

The Snakehead by Patrick Radden Keefe is the best non -fiction I've read this year. Keefe tells the story of Cheng Chui Ping aka Sister Ping who came from China's Fujian Province to New York's Chinatown in the early 1980's. Over the next twenty years Sister Ping created an international business empire which brought illegals from Fujian Province to the United States. She is alleged to have made forty million dollars. The beginning of the end of her global business came in 1993 when the boat, the Golden Venture, ran aground off the coast of Queens. The three hundred illegal immigrants were forced to jump ship. Some drowned and the ones who safely made it to the beach were arrested. It was widely covered in the news at the time. The book is a well researched, well written and intriguing story about international people smuggling and all it entails. The web site for the book is terrific- full of information, pictures and also includes a great trailer. Check it out then buy the book.
