Montreal Summer 2009 - Holga

Montreal is a fun summer city. This visit I pursued my interest in "run on" Holga photos. I also used a piece of almost clear strapping tape as a mask. Some of the lines of the tape can been seen in parts of the photos. As we were there to attend Fantasia Festival I took pictures while waiting for the next movie to begin. What that means in reality is my husband stood in line for the next movie and I walked around the block, took pictures, then rejoined him as the line began to move into the theater.

A "run on" photo of women walking along the street and our entering Montreal from the southern shore.

Trees and the tops of buildings around Concordia University where Fantasia Festival is held.

The area around Concordia University is under construction as seen in the top of the above photo. I took this photo on a Friday afternoon when there weren't a lot of people around.

Taken out the car window. Concordia Hall Theatre the larger venue for Fantasia Fest films. We've waited in line along the sunny side of the building for many many movies. I took the photo at 10:45 on a Friday morning, still too early to line up for the 1 o'clock movie.

PHOTO FRIDAY - IN SHADOW

Coming home from New York Wednesday evening on the train I noticed an interesting effect made by the setting sun. For under a minute the sun light reflecting off the blue train seats, the overhead recessed train lights and the reflections in the train windows combined to create a shadowy look in the train car.

The scenic train ride from New York's Penn Station to Albany/Rensselaer travels along the Hudson River and travelers can watch the sun set over the hills (small mountains) across the river.

The effect created lasted such a short time it was over almost before it began.

I quicky snapped three shots from my seat and by the time I stood up to take more photos the the effect was gone.

Fantasia Festival - Montreal 2009

This year's Fantasia Festival was lot of fun. Every year I say the festival was a lot of fun. We've been attending Fantasia for several years so to say this every year is a tribute to the people who plan the festival. The fun actually begins when the film line up is announced. We spend a couple of days reading about the movie selections then listing the movies each of us wants to see. We were lucky this year as both our first choices played on the same day. One screened in the early afternoon the other at night so we picked two other movies to watch in between.

A great fantasy art festival poster. The festival is held at Concordia University and people line up early for the movies.

Festival banner over Maisonneuve Blvd West. Most movies are shown in two theaters across the street from each other. We often leave one movie and hurry across Maisonneuve to stand in line for our next screening.

My first film choice was the 2009 South Korean movie by Park Chan-wook , Thirst. Above is the original post which was considered too risque/blasphemous.

Sanctioned Thirst poster with the relection of Concordia's Hall Theater lobby. Song Kang-ho was very good as the vampire priest. The movie was a little long or maybe seemed so as it was the fourth movie of the day for us. It switched back and forth between comedy and drama but that didn't lessen my enjoyment of the movie. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance is still my favorite Park movie with Thirst a close second.

The royal women of Queens of Langkasuka dressed for battle. The costumes in the movie were wonderful.

The poster for the Thai 2008 movie, Queens of Langkasuka, directed by Nonzee Nimibutr. This entertaining, action-packed historical film was my husband's first choice and his favorite at this year's festival.

This 2008 Korean independent film, Daytime Drinking, was made for very little money. Written and directed by Noh Young-seok it had a good script, a good director and good actors. Very enjoyable and I hope to see more movies from the talented Noh.

Another version of the poster for Daytime Drinking.

The Japanese poster for Dream written and directed by Kim Ki-duk.

The Korean poster for this 2008 movie with Japanese star Joe Odigiri and Korean actress Lee Na-yeong was visually beautiful. The storyline was interesting and clever but not entirely successful to this viewer. Previously I'd watched the DVD so seeing the movie on the big screen was entertaining as the sets were so stunning.
